Seismic-to-well calibration is performed in order to integrate seismic and well data to build a consistent picture of the subsurface. While seismic data alone provides a good overall picture of a large subsurface area, well data delivers a high-resolution, detailed and quantitative picture of the subsurface at a single location. Integrating these datasets is the only way to obtain a detailed quantitative picture of an areal subsurface. This makes seismic-to-well calibration a central component in any seismic interpretation or reservoir characterization workflow.
Seismic-to-well calibration is often referred to as a “Synthetics utility”, because the basic action in this utility is the calculation of a “synthetic seismogram”.
