Structural deformation of the stratigraphic layers often makes direct interpretation of time/depth slices of the seismic lithofacies a very challenging and time-consuming job. This becomes even more difficult in a depositional complex environment. However, seismic data provides chronostratigraphic and seismic lithofacies information derived from reflection characteristics that can be exploited to tackle this task. This data, along with structural information extracted from seismic discontinuities, produces a very powerful tool for interpreting the subsurface.
Restoring the stratigraphic record prior to structural deformation is an enabler using any seismic lithofacies information in interpretation, seismic reservoir characterization and modeling.
In this presentation, we demonstrate how to combine automatic and semi-automatic interpretation technologies using a space-time mathematical framework (UVT Transform®) to build an accurate subsurface model. We begin by building a full fault network in just minutes, to extract a large number of single seismic events from the cube as horizon patches. After cleaning them, each patch is associated with an individual iso-time constraint. The set of constraints is then used to parameterize the geological space and automatically compute the chronostratigraphic model. The chronostratigraphic model matches all seismic coherent signals, and not only the few horizons typically interpreted, allowing the accurate use of seismic information in a geostatistical model used in a reservoir model. This technology allows the user to perform more reliable 3D seismic volume flattening, which can be used to QC and modify the interpretation. It also reveals geological features that wouldn’t be seen in conventionally flattened space.
