Seismic data is the largest consumer of data storage in the O&G industry, and working with large seismic datasets can be extremely challenging. To help address these challenges, Paradigm has developed a new seismic compression roaming capability for poststack seismic data that optimizes data management and saves disk space and time, while maintaining seismic precision. 

Characteristics of Paradigm’s compression approach include:
  • Interactive access to compressed files, with decompression on the fly
  • Multi CPU/GPU parallelized wavelet compression/decompression
  • No clipping or truncating; maintains values 
  • Quality-based compression level (gives same quality of compression throughout, insensitive to amplitude variations)

Compressed brick files can be created in the Seismic Data Manager from existing Paradigm seismic files, individually or as a batch process.

Creating and Using Poststack Compressed Brick Files
Using compressed brick files saves disk space and network bandwidth.  In case of bottlenecks associated with data access, it can enhance interactive application performance. 

The compression algorithm is based on a 3D wavelet transformation, and involves no clipping or truncating of the data. Being insensitive to amplitude variations, it keeps the same quality of compression throughout the data without causing any coherent artefacts. Compression up to ~4x* is virtually lossless and adequate for quantitative workflows. Higher levels of compression correspond to higher levels of accuracy loss, but compression ratios as high as 15x or more can be adequate for structural interpretation workflows. 

The compressed file is decompressed on-the-fly prior to being used by Epos applications to become a brick file which is non-compressed, multi-resolution, and optimized for roaming by the 3D Canvas. 

Available Now!
Paradigm compression roaming is available now, through a licensable plugin to our Epos® infrastructure and database.  This release enables customers to compress 3D poststack seismic data and read the compressed seismic from all Paradigm applications that can access Epos seismic directly: SeisEarth®, Stratimagic®, Explorer™, SKUA-GOCAD™, and GeoDepth®.
