Seismic Velocities

Enhance confidence in your drilling decisions.

Accurate velocity models are key – without that first step, effective time-to-depth conversion, seismic imaging, micro-seismic positioning, and seismic analysis are impossible. AspenTech Subsurface Science & Engineering (SSE) seismic velocity modeling software helps you define highly accurate velocity models while at the same time honoring geological constraints through a combination of high science, a comprehensive set of velocity analysis tools, and interactive and automated workflows.

AspenTech SSE velocity modeling solutions are used routinely by the global oil and gas industry to parameterize isotropic and anisotropic velocity models for depth imaging, time-to-depth conversion, seismic inversion, and pore pressure prediction.

GeoDepth is designed to easily handle the full range of global seismic imaging challenges. It enhances the imaging and positioning of subsurface geological structures (fault shadow, subsalt, sub-basalt, salt flanks, reefs, gas plumes, thrust faults, subtle lateral velocity variations) for reduced drilling risk in every environment.

AspenTech SSE integrated seismic velocity modeling solutions deliver:

  • Short project cycle time even on large projects consisting of many terabytes of data
  • A fast learning curve and full control over the velocity analysis and modeling process
  • Enhanced reliability of all information derived from seismic data
  • Reduced positional uncertainty

The iterative velocity modeling process is optimized at every stage of the workflow. In the first stage, the initial velocity model can be easily constructed from time interpretation and stacking/RMS velocity picks, employing both horizon- and vertical-based analysis. In the model-updating phase, when accuracy is paramount, advanced proprietary techniques ensure that the model is accurate and fully consistent with geological constraints like well information. To help geoscientists synchronize earth model and velocity model building processes in areas of complex geology, AspenTech SSE now offers an integrated GeoDepth-SKUA workflow.  This helps oil company operators define accurate velocity models for a broad range of subsurface geologic regimes (subsalt, overthrust, naturally fractured reservoirs). This integration not only enforces best practices in connecting geologic and velocity data, but it empowers geoscientists to build geologically-constrained velocity models that use all available data and reduce their non-uniqueness.  Validation processes, such as full-azimuth illumination and RTM forward modeling, are used to test model parameterization and assumptions.
