Renewable Energy Production and Storage
A good understanding of the subsurface is essential
To reach net zero emissions by 2050, a mix of low carbon and renewable sources is needed. In that context, energy companies are heavily investing in wind and solar energy. Site investigation before installing windmills or solar panels requires a good understanding of the near surface. As such, the technology needs are close to those of civil engineering.
As renewable sources such as wind or solar power are subject to strong natural fluctuations, the need for geological energy storage is expected to increase in the future. Cross-discipline reservoir study is key to identifying storage locations and assessing their capacity, preserving reservoir and caprock integrity, and optimizing the injection and production of the stored gas.
