Elive Menyoli, Emerson Business Development Manager P&I, will present a paper, "Precision Velocity Model Building for Onshore fields: Globally Matching Seismic Data to Well Data for Optimal Placement and Steering", at the Annual Meeting of the Permian Basin Geophysical Society, on May 21, at 9:00 AM CT.  In light of the COVID-19 situation, the meeting will be held online.


While seismic data plays an important role in characterizing unconventional plays, a persistent challenge is to precisely map the formations in depth using seismic data. Having accurate control and knowledge of depth positioning of target formations are of major importance for well planning and geosteering. Although the earth model is much better represented through a set of optimized anisotropic parameters in the process of seismic imaging, mis-ties continue to remain when seismic interpretation is correlated to the well tops. We have introduced the innovative time-preserving tomography technology that provides a stable and systematic solution that is invoked at any stage of the velocity modeling workflow. This presentation will illustrate the technologies and workflows on a case study. With this solution, accurate seismic time-to-depth conversion or re-depthing can be achieved efficiently. Compared to most industry-adopted workflows for seismic-to-well calibration, our workflow honors the basic assumptions of seismic velocity model building, and produces geologically-constrained velocities without artifacts.


Dr. Elive Menyoli has over 15 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. Prior to joining Emerson, he worked at Marathon Oil and Total E&P USA, in deep water projects. Dr. Menyoli holds a MSc degree in Physics from the University of Goettingen, Germany and a PhD in Geophysics from the University of Hamburg, Germany.  He has authored numerous publications in seismic imaging and interpretation, with a recent emphasis on shale resource plays.
