Working Efficiently as an Exploration Geophysicist - Tips and Tricks

Paradigm is proud to unveil its new lecture series, "A Day in the Life of a Geoscientist".  In this series, prominent geoscientists will share their knowledge and experience on a variety of topics of vital interest to our industry.


Our value as geophysicists is our ability to make recommendations to management, clients and partners regarding the value of their data and/or property.  Subsequently, we act as investment advisors, with significant decisions being made based upon the work that we do. Whether undertaking data quality control, reconnaissance of a large frontier area, detailed prospect generation or assessment of a data room, it is advantageous to be an efficient geophysicist, in order to allow sufficient time to collaborate and think deeply. Using Paradigm 3D Canvas and a marine dataset, we will step through a workflow to efficiently evaluate seismic data, identify pitfalls, and present some tips and tricks for the seismic interpreter.


Rachel_Newrick_sm.jpgDr. Rachel Newrick is an Exploration Geophysicist for Racian Ventures, consulting to the oil and gas industry. She is a puzzle solver at heart, loves to take on new challenges and to help others understand their data and geoscience concepts. Rachel is also a tutor for Nautilus World, teaching Introduction to Seismic Interpretation and Introduction to 3D Interpretation in Canada,the USA, and other nations worldwide. 

Rachel has over 20 years of geophysics experience.  She holds undergraduate degrees from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and a PhD in Exploration Seismology from the University of Calgary, Canada. 

She is a Past President of the CSEG and a member of SEG, AAPG and APEGA (P.Geoph and P.Geol). Rachel co-authored Fundamentals of Geophysical Interpretation with Dr. Larry Lines, and participated in the Agile Geophysics '52 Things You Should Know About Geophysics' and '52 Things You Should Know About Rock Physics’ projects.
